Sidsel Endresen 2014 Molde Jazz Festival Artist in Residence
Singer, composer, lyricist and vocal improvisation pioneer Sidsel Endresen announced as the 2014 Molde International Jazz Festival Artist in Residence.This week, the Molde International Jazz Fesival announced Sidsel Endresen as the festival’s 2014 Artist in Residence.From 14 to 19 July, Endresen is set to perform with her trio Merriwinkle, in a duo setting with guitarist Stian Westerhus, with her own sextet and as part of a Punkt Festival special featuring live-remixes of some of contemporary jazz’ key performers.Sidsel Endresen is one of Norway’s most prolific and internationally recognized improvisation musicians; a strong and distinct personality who makes her mark on all the projects she participates in. Covering a vast musical territory reaching from Nordic folk songs and cutting-edge improvisation to the rich cultural heritage of Arabic, Chinese and Japanese traditional singing, Endresen has created her own form of expression, and gradually perfected it into a new musical language.Says Endresen on her Molde Jazz Artist in Residence assignment:- Over many years, the Molde Jazz Festival has supported me and represented a key arena for me and my music. It is an honour to be this year’s Artist in Residence and it represents a fantastic opportunity to bring together some of my main projects over the last decade. My Molde residency will be devoted in its entirety to my work with free improvisation, alongside some of my main musical partners in later years. Electric and electronic-tinged music with Stian Westerhus, Merriwinkle, Honoré and Bang as well as a grander, more acoustic oriented format with my sextet. Over the years the festival has given key exposure for Norwegian jazz acts as the event has a long history of attracting international media and music industry reps.The festival has also long been host to special projects and, as one of five festivals—Molde being the only jazz event—receiving additional government funding, Molde has been able to commission new works that have been recorded and ultimately released commercially.
